YouTube safety

It was tough choosing a topic for this week - so many choices!  I decided to start with a subtopic of Internet Safety ... viewing YouTube.

Both of us (Ella Jane & Andie) work in the same school district at different schools.  Very recently our system filters have allowed us to view YouTube.  Currently enrolled in a class titled "Flipping the Classroom", I was so happy to get this "bonus" of viewing videos online in the classroom.  On the heels of that elation was a fearful, "Oh no!"  I've used YouTube in my personal life, and am aware of the "junk" that comes with it ... related searches, ads, etc. Not all of these are school appropriate, and not all of them are caught by the strict filter our system has in place.

That's when I began investigating safer viewing of video online.  I first came upon a site www.securemama.com suggesting safe search options, and includes a short how-to employ web filters.  The site www.YouTube.clea.nr also has a download for mobile devices, as well as extensions for Safari, Firefox, and Chrome.  And yes, there are alternatives to YouTube: sqooltools.com, TeacherTube.com, KidsTube.com, and even YouTube has an educator's channel.

My #1 choice?  www.viewpure.com  Soooo easy!  From their site, drag the "purify" button to the tool bar, or add it to your favorites bar.  When opening YouTube, click "purify" and VIOLA !!  The result is a clean screen - nothing in the margins, no related searches, no ads...nothing but the desired video!
